Teaching

I was the sole instructor for K353 - Business Analytics and Modeling in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 at Kelley School of Business, Indiana University, for which I received the 2021 Indiana University’s Dr. James E. Mumford Excellence in Extraordinary Teaching Award.

K353 is an upper-level undergraduate course that covers machine learning models, optimization, and simulation using the R programming language. There are two major parts of K353: understanding and applying the models and techniques and learning the programming language R.

Throughout the course, I emphasize self-evaluation among my students. I encourage them to ask themselves three questions about the material: (1) Why are we using this model (and not another one)? (2) Why are we selecting these parameter values to use in the function? and (3) Do the results make sense? As a means of further challenging their analytical skills, I occasionally introduce intentional errors during class and inquire about these same questions, aiming to gauge their ability to identify and rectify the mistakes. This pedagogical approach fosters a sense of responsibility among the students, transforming them into proficient data analysts and astute critical thinkers.
